Students were introduced to the design process during this unit. They were tasked with helping the Atlanta Botanical Gardens keep critters away from their plants by designing a scarecrow. They used various materials to construct a life size scarecrow that was then sent to the Atlanta Botanical Garden facilities for display.
Students explored the vibrant ways people around the world use color to express traditions, feelings, and stories. The driving question, "How do people around the world use colors to express their traditions, feelings, and stories?" guided students as they delved into the rich traditions of cultures across Asia, Native American tribes, Muslim communities, India, and Africa. From learning about the significance of kente cloth to the joyful celebrations of Lunar New Year and Holi, students discovered how color, pattern, and shape are woven into cultural expressions.
Throughout the unit, students engaged with experts from diverse cultural backgrounds, gaining fresh perspectives and hands-on experiences. They developed their own artistic beats, incorporating what they learned about color, patterns, and shapes, and collaborated with a South African artist to create a mixed-media artwork that celebrated the world’s many cultures.
Additionally, students crafted their own meaningful products, such as kente cloth, pride crowns, and written affirmations. They composed songs and shared their personal stories through color, tradition, and creativity, reflecting the pride they feel for themselves and their cultures. This unit was a celebration of the global tapestry of human expression, teaching students the power of color in storytelling and cultural pride.
