6th Grade ScienceIn Life Sciences, students are learning about the different systems that make up the world around them. The curriculum includes a variety of projects involving design, group work, presentations, and experiments so students can develop the tools they need to think critically about their environment. Topics for this year include Astronomy, Geology, Hydrology, Meteorology and Human impact on the Earth.
|
For the Drew Science Fair, our sixth-grade students investigated the differences between Earth and Mars. they used the scientific process to design a piece of technology that would allow humans to survive on Mars.
For the Solar Eclipse this year, students examined what happens during a solar eclipse. They constructed models to show the positions of the Earth, Moon and Sun during the event.
|
During the Moon Phases Unit, students applied concepts they learned from the solar eclipse to determine how the positions of the Earth, Moon and Sun affect how long a day is in different seasons.

GRADE 6 PBL SPOTLIGHT: Discovering Mathematical Patterns in Nature
Students in 6th grade are discovering how ubiquitous mathematical patterns and ratios are. Students learned about Fibonacci sequences and applied their knowledge to find the same patterns in Nature, Art and Engineering. Using resources like the STEAM truck and STEAM trunks, students integrated Fibonacci sequences into their own designs.
STEAM Components
S- Finding Fibonacci Patterns in Orientation of Planets and Galaxy
T- Used Fibonacci Sequences to understand technological designs and how patterns contribute to design function
E- Examined how Fibonacci sequences can be used in the design of structures
A- Created art with central theme of Fibonacci patterns using a variety of artistic methods (STEAM Trunks)
M- Using common factors, numbers and ratios to find patterns in nature
