First graders learned about the basic concepts of economics, such as goods, services, and saving. Students were able to understand more about earning money through work while also understanding the difference between spending choices and purchasing goods. Through market research, students collaborated together to create their own businesses that provided goods and services to the Drew community. To earn money, students were able to sell goods or services and share their experience about the creation of their business and various products.

First graders were able to make connections between topics such as a healthy diet and exercise, healthy vs. non-healthy foods and food deserts. Students analyzed the results of their peers in order to see what types of foods are most and least readily available within the community, analyzing if these foods are healthy or not. Also, students were able to learn more about living vs. nonliving things and how they affect the plant and animal life, and what living things need to survive. With this understanding, Students were able to learn more about how they can contribute healthy choices and alternatives to their community.
Data Collection
Urban communities often lack grocery stores or farmer’s markets to provide nutritious fruits and vegetables, which creates food deserts. First graders investigated and completed a scavenger hunt to discover and record their experience exploring stores in their community. Students with family members visited 3 retail stores in their community searching for healthy food choices. Students recorded food options, and information about their trip. |
