Second grade students learned more about the different types of changes (humans, weather, plants, and animals) that can have long term effects and its impact on the environment and eventually the community overall. Students were able to use their resources and research to find different passion projects that could help resolve some of the problems caused by these changes. For their passion projects, students were able to create dioramas, PSAs, animal habitats, etc. to display that numerous solutions. Also, students collaborated with Sound Learning to create their very own songs that explains how people can become change-makers in their community and will be displayed during Showcase Night.
"Whisper Room"
Students participated in the Whisper Room event, where students went to different classrooms and learned about the four types of change (humans, weather, plants, and animals) through various experiences.

Second grade students were able to learn more and apply their decision making skills using economic concepts. Students learned about the economic vocabulary such as, personal savings, scarcity, opportunity costs, lottery, first-come-first-served, and spending choices. Students were able to create their own arcade games to include: scarcity, opportunity costs, saving and spending, or push and pull. Students were able to make connections by participating in real life scenarios that teach the vocabulary and learned how to make responsible financial choices and how they can impact the future.  Also, students used their engineering skills to update the Tinker Yard Pinball Machine.
Research and Development
Students played money-themed board games (Monopoly, The Game of Life, The Allowance Game, etc.).
  • Playing these games allowed students to make choices regarding economics. After playing these games, students created their first journal entry by answering the following questions:
    • “What did you learn from playing these games?”
    • What did you like about the game?
    • What would you change about the game?
  • Students were presented with the challenge of designing their own arcade games to demonstrate their understanding of the economics concepts.
Final Products
  • Group Projects:
    • Gameboard, app/video game, game show, etc.
  • Individual Projects
