What is a Makerspace?
A makerspace is anywhere that enables experimenting, creating, inventing, learning and making of any kind. Drew's makerspaces function as engineering classrooms by day and become inclusive hubs of making after school and on the weekends.
Stocked with arts + craft supplies, carpentry tools, electronics, 3D printers and a myriad of other making materials, our makerspaces allow students, their families and the community to work on projects (either for school or their own interests), tinker with new technologies, try their ideas and begin to see themselves as makers. We strive for our makerspaces to foster not just creations but connections, community ties and memories.

Hours + LocationsThe makerspaces are shared with the engineering classrooms. When not being used for instruction, the spaces can be used during the day by students and teachers with permission and by making an appointment with the Makerspace Manager. See below for opportunities to use the Makerspaces after school!
Makerspace After-school club Elementary Academy Room 158 (2nd-5th grade makers) Registration is full for Fall 2024. Younger makers are asked to reserve a spot in advance for the Open Makerspace Hours in the Elementary Academy. You will only need to sign up once per semester using the link above. Makespace hours start right after school and end at 5:30pm. This year we will be having two groups that meet either on Tuesdays or Wednesdays twice a month. Makerspace Hours will start in August. First priority will be given to makers new to makerspace hours. Mr. Ayers will contact families the week of August 12 to finalize arrangements for the Fall 2024 session. You will supervise and assist other makers at your table. Also, Ambassadors will be invited to special Ambassadors only making sessions. There are only 12 slots available, please indicate you are interested in being an ambassador when you sign up for the club. Priority will be given to makers who were engaged in our projects and demonstrated making ability and responsibility. Ambassador Only Sessions: (Tentative) Thurs 9/26, Wed 11/6, Tue 12/17 Open Makerspace Hours Yates Campus A103 (6th-12 grade makers) Available Now! Open makerspace hours will be held in the makerspace in A103 right after school until 6pm. No reservations are required. Bring your laptop to get the most out of your time (we also have laptops available if you can't bring yours.) Text @gb42d84 to 81010 to get news about the Yates campus Makerspace hours through the Remind App. Makerspace Snacks It's hard to concentrate on an empty stomach! Feel free to pack an extra snack for your maker on their day to participate. We don't have access to the same snacks as the afterschool program, so I periodically ask parents to sign up to bring something for everyone. I like to have non-allergen snacks available (no nuts please) so we can focus on making. Makers love fruit snacks, chips, and pouch drinks like Capri Sun. They also like fresh fruit, applesauce in pouches, and granola bars. We have a water fountain available. Please bring enough food and drink for 30 makers for EA Makerspace hours. Some of our makers are vegetarian so if you have a choice of snacks, look for those that do not contain animal products like gelatin. I welcome donations of snacks for Thursdays at the upper campus as well - please send items that don't spoil. |
