Third grade students learned more about heat and how it affects our daily lives. Students explored how heat is produced, measured, and controlled. Students investigated how diverse materials affect the atmospheric temperature and what they could do to reduce the effects. Student planned and created solutions that will benefit the community.

Third grade students were able to learn more about experts in earth science and how they use their expertise to help others in the community to be responsible for the land. Students were able to learn more about the earth science standards involving minerals, rocks, soils and the numerous changes that can affect them. Students created interactive booths and brochures to describe how to take care of the land, the various problems of earth science and how we can reduce the harmful effects.
Dunwoody Nature Center Field Trip
Students were introduced to earth science standards by participating in an in-house field trip with Dunwoody Nature Center. Students were able to explore rocks, minerals, fossils, and create profiles of experts.
Interactive Booths
Students created interactive booths for guests to inform them solutions to Earth science problems in our community. Students provide informational brochures about what guests can do to reduce harmful effects.

Third graders engaged in a critical investigation of the effects of plastic on the environment and chose different methods for raising awareness about the importance of conservation.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS
  • What effect has plastic had on Georgia wildlife and ocean wildlife?
  • How can we reduce the amount of "single-use" plastic products?
  • How has human influence positively and negatively affected the environment?
ADVENTURE
Plastic Scavenger Hunt | Third graders found and recorded examples of permanent, disposable and reusable plastic within our Drew community.

PBL SHOWCASE NIGHT EXHIBITS
  • Displays of plastic waste vs. sea life’s food
  • Plastic products that have been put to a new use or re-designed for environmental sustainability
  • Art pieces and performances persuading others to adopt a less wasteful lifestyle
  • Proposals for installing water bottle fountains at Drew
  • Videos and blog posts sharing tips on how to use less plastic featured on grade3pbl.weebly.com
