First graders investigated the issue of "food deserts," urban communities that lack access to affordable, nutritious foods. To address this problem, they hosted a community garden event to plant and harvest fresh produce and created picture books to show others how to grow their own fruits and vegetables.
First grade experienced economics in action by participating in a mini marketplace and taking on the roles of consumers, producers and savers. Each class set up a small business producing homemade goods such as lemonade, bookmarks and Drew spirit bracelets. They also grew produce in the Tinker Garden and sold their harvest at a weekly farmers market. To earn play money they could either spend or save, students completed chores around the school.
After studying natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, blizzards and tornadoes, students developed digital resources to educate others on how to prepare for these catastrophic events.
