6TH GRADE PBL: Designing Technology for Human Survival on Mars
Applying Scientific Knowledge and Inventing Creative Solutions:
For the Drew Science Fair, our 6th graders integrated their knowledge about the movements of the Moon, Sun, and Earth with collaborative designs. They learned about the conditions on Mars, and worked to design technology that would allow humans to live on Mars. As part of the scientific process, students went through several rough drafts of their designs and put together presentations to explain their final projects at the science fair.
STEAM Components
S- Applied Knowledge about Conditions on Mars to Create Projects
T-Analyze and interpret data to compare and contrast the planets in solar system for ability to support life. Development of models and visuals.
E-Designed technological solutions using scientific investigation, analysis and interpretation of data about life on Mars, including innovation, invention, and fabrication. Considered environmental, ethical, safety, manufacturability, and sustainability constraints.
A- Use of Design Notebooks and Rough Drafts Before Creating Final Project
M- Conversion Factors to Make Correctly Scaled Technology from Notebook Sketches
